A Brief Introduction on CBD Oil

CBD oil (Cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating compound present in the hemp plant. We understand CBD in close relation to THC—the component that causes the high from cannabis.

Unlike THC, CBD does not have intoxicating effects on the body. It is, in fact, a therapeutic compound that helps in managing pain and inflammation and provides a sense of calm.

The richest source of CBD is the hemp plant. It is a species of cannabis that naturally contains high amounts of CBD. It is extracted from different parts of the plant and used to make products such as oils, edibles, creams, and capsules.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in the human body. This system is responsible for maintaining regular functions and feelings in the body.

CBD is a cannabinoid and the human body also produces cannabinoids on its own (called endocannabinoids).

These two types of cannabinoids have a similar structure. Cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, therefore, mimic the endocannabinoids and interact with their receptors.

Different cannabinoids interact in different ways and therefore has different effects on the body.

Primarily, CBD encourages the production of the body’s natural endocannabinoids. But it can also interact with opioid, dopamine, and serotonin receptors.

Types of CBD Oil

There are three different types of CBD oils that any buyer should know about:

Full-spectrum CBD oil: an extract that contains all compounds occurring naturally in the source plant. Full-spec Cannabidiol, thus contains terpenes, essential oils, and other cannabinoids in addition to the CBD.

CBD Isolate: is the purest form of CBD produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant. CBD isolates are typically extracted from hemp because it contains low to non-existent amounts of THC.

Broad-spectrum CBD oil: is a bit of a mix between CBD isolate and full-spec CBD. Like the full-spec CBD, the other components present in the plant are preserved in the extract. But like the CBD isolate, THC is completely removed.

For the longest time, the popular belief was that CBD isolate works best.

But recent studies suggest that full-spectrum CBD oil works better because of a process called entourage effect wherein all the components work together to magnify the therapeutic benefits of each.

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

CBD as a Medicine

CBD is primarily a relaxant that works especially well for inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

The major benefit of CBD oil is to induce feelings of calmness and relaxation in the body.

Since it also helps with inflammation, it is a great agent for healthy muscle recovery and supports pain management in conditions such as arthritis.

Its relaxant properties help in controlling epileptic seizures, cancer-related symptoms, and keeping heart health in check.

There are about 30 health conditions, studied as of now, that CBD can help with. The major ones among these are anxiety, depression, arthritis, chronic pain, epilepsy, MS, and sleep disorders.

CBD as a Skincare Supplement

Cannabidiol also has anti-oxidant properties which is making it a popular ingredient in cosmetic products.

CBD oil helps in reducing inflammation and irritation on the skin. For this reason, it helps with conditions such as acne and psoriasis.
